Biržai is situated in the northern part of Lithuania, 201 kilometers north of Vilnius and 90 kilometers south of Riga, close to Lithuania’s border with Latvia. First mentioned in 1455, the City of Biržai was granted Magdeburg Rights on March 9, 1455. For defensive purpose, Agluona and Apasčia Rivers were damned, and the Širvėna Lake or dam was created. It is the oldest dam in Lithuania. It occupies an area of 336 hectares. In 1589, the Biržai castle, the most powerful bastion of the time, was built. It defended the northern border of Lithuania. In 1701, Russian Tsar Peter I and King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth August II signed a treaty against the Swedes in Biržai.
Today Biržai can be viewed as a resort. It is a green city adorned with two rivers and two lakes. The bastion fortress reminds us of city‘s grand history. Nowadays the castle is the home of the local museum “Sėla“ and J. Bielinis Library. The Museum offers unique exhibits and tells the story of Biržai and its surroundings. The Biržai Castle is the most well preserved fortress in all of Lithuania. After admiring the castle and the castle hill one can visit the Tiškevičius Castle in Astravas, which can be reached on foot crossing the Širvėna Lake on a wooden 525-meter long bridge.
If you come to Biržai, you must see the “Cow‘s Cave“, which is the largest sinkhole in Lithuania. There are over 7100 sinkholes in the Biržai Region.
From ancient times, Biržai has been famous for its beer. The ancient beer brewing traditions have been preserved to this day. Today Biržai beer is brewed by four breweries. In 1704, when the Swedish army left the castle ant the whole city in ruins, Biržai dwellers showed their great respect and regard for their beer by first rebuilding the brewery, and only then the city hall. After the Swedish onslaught, the beer brewing recovered remarkably quickly, and a new law was passed according to which the breweries had to make only very high quality beer. Present-day Biržai brewers still abide to this law.
